Sleep conditions, such as sleep apnea, can cause one to lose valuable sleep at night. A lack of sleep can, in turn, have a negative impact on one’s health. Wagoner Community Hospital’s Sleep Disorders Center offers state-of-the-art monitoring in a comfortable environment.
Sleep apnea is a condition that causes the throat’s air passage to close repeatedly during sleep, stopping breathing and disrupting the normal stages of sleep. The results of sleep apnea can be serious illness or even death caused by lack of oxygen. Symptoms include snoring, daytime sleepiness, gasping for air at night, personality changes, depression, chronic fatigue, insomnia and morning headaches.
The best way to test for and diagnose sleep apnea is through an overnight sleep study in our diagnostic sleep laboratory. The study provides valuable information about how one breathes and sleeps. This information enables one’s doctor to determine the type and severity of sleep apnea one may have and how it should be treated.
We understand that spending the night away from home can be uncomfortable. Our sleep lab provides all the comforts of home, though, including spacious private bedroom with a comfortable bed, television and private bath – making one’s night away from home as easy as possible. Our friendly staff will orient our patients to lessen anxiety and help them become familiar with the sleep study environment.
During the sleep study, a registered polysomnographic technologist will monitor the patient’s sleep activities from a separate room. State-of-the-art equipment is utilized to measure brain waves, muscle activity, movement, heart rhythms and other key indicators. The patient’s sleep study is scored by a registered polysomnographer and interpreted by a sleep medicine physician.
