Dr. John Kennedy Bini, MD, FACS

Dr. Bini obtained his medical degree from Texas Tech in 1999. He was elected as president of the AOA Honor Medical Society chapter.  He completed his general surgery residency and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at UT Health Science Center San Antonio.  Dr. Bini is board certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.  He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, member of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST), member of the Society for Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), and a member of the Association of Academic Surgery/Society of University Surgeons (AAS/SUS).  His last military assignment was as embedded faculty at Wright State University where he was responsible for actively integrating military and civilian trauma care and education on a daily basis. While in this position he was the Medical Director of the Surgical ICU, selected as chair of the section of trauma and was a two-time winner of the Albert B. Huffer, M.D. Award for Outstanding Teaching by A Clinical Faculty Member.

 

Throughout his career Dr. Bini has played an integral role in the development and implementation of the DoD’s deployed trauma system.  He has extensive combat surgical, trauma and critical care experience and has deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq three times, including as the Chief of Trauma at the largest and busiest medical facility in Afghanistan where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.   He was the Air Force’s director of the Emergency War Surgery Course (EWSC) between 2007 and 2013.  In this role he was personally responsible for training all deploying Air Force surgeons in the application of the principles of the DoD Trauma System including data capture, feedback, process improvement and development and implementation of lessons learned into clinical practice guidelines.

Dr. Bini has been a member of the Combat Trauma Surgery Committee (CTSC), which was tasked with revising the Military Emergency War Surgery Manual based on lessons learned from the DoD Trauma System performance improvement process and development of applicable training platforms.  Dr. Bini is an expert in military trauma systems and has been an invited lecturer speaking about lessons learned from military trauma care and their application to civilian trauma care.  He has several peer reviewed publications and text chapters and has presented his work at national meetings.

In 2019 Dr. Bini retired from the Air Force with over 21 years of active-duty experience. He remains active in surgical education and has assisted with the administration of mock oral exams for the University of Oklahoma surgical residency program in Tulsa, Oklahoma and is an ATLS instructor and course director. He currently maintains faculty appointments at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine and the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences where he remains involved in several AAST multicenter trials.

 

Dr. Bini has over 20 years-experience as a busy general surgeon whose practice has encompassed the full gamut of general surgical procedures.  He has extensive experience in both the elective and  acute care surgical settings.  He is an experienced laparoscopic and robotic surgeon who is qualified on the DaVinci Xi robotic platform.  Prior to coming to Wagoner, he was the Director of Surgical Critical Care, Co-director of the ICU and Associate Trauma Medical Director at Medical City McKinney Hospital in McKinney, Texas.

 

Dr. Bini, his wife and daughter live in Inola and have a small farm that they share with their horses, goats, chickens, and dogs.  When not at work, Dr. Bini most enjoys spending time with his family riding horses, biking, skiing and anything that involves being active and outdoors together.
